The day the cousins played pretend

My cousin Jacky is in town and our kids have enjoyed some "getting to know you" time lately.

Here are Ezra and Ellie and Jacky in the nursery wing of Kidventures:

Do they look alike?

Here is Ella after hellsof chocolate milk:

Future stylist

After a months-long obsession with tights and dresses, today Marina asked if she could wear a dress with short socks.

Shalom Harlow will star as me.

Yesterday was among the worst days I've had as a mother. And that's putting it nicely for the sake of the blog.

And as I was processing the death of Alexander McQueen and watching his runway shows online, I found one that captured - quite perfectly and artistically - the spirit of how I felt.

The Ima

"Ima" (pronounced Eema) is the Hebrew word for Mom.
Every Friday, a little girl in every Jewish preschool classroom gets the honor of being the Shabbat Ima. As you will see, it means you get to light the Shabbat candles, do blessings over wine and bread, wear a scarf that looks like it comes from 1890s Russia and pretend you're married to a boy in your class.

It's AWESOME.

You have to trust me on this because I know first hand. You see, I, too, was a Shabbat Ima at this very same preschool.

And it was just as great and confusing as Ella is exhibiting below:
